Google’s Android Wear smartwatches now work with iPhones

Google wants to make sure it gets smartwatches powered by its software on as many wrists as possible — even if that means treading into enemy territory.

The search giant on Monday said smartwatches that run Android Wear, the Google-made software tailored for wearable devices, will now work with Apple’s iPhones.

That move is a major shift in Google’s approach to smartwatches. Up until now, Android Wear smartwatches — made by hardware vendors including Samsung, Motorola and LG — only worked with Android-based smartphones. By connecting to iPhone users, Google expands its potential crop of customers — Apple sold 47.5 million iPhones in the last quarter alone.Google is likely hoping that making Android Wear smartwatches more widely usable will entice iPhone owners mulling a smartwatch purchase to consider an option other than the Apple Watch, which only works with the iPhone. Apple’s first wearable has become the world’s most popular smartwatch within its first few months on the market this year, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.

8 of the World’s Weirdest Pools

By Kristine Hansen

Forget about swim-up bars and elegant infinity pools. Today’s coolest hotel pools flaunt jaw-dropping, quirky amenities like sharks on the other side of a glass wall or the image of Andy Warhol’s face on the floor below. Forget about those old kidney shapes, too. These days a pool may be saucer-shaped, or a glass cube.

Tired of the same-old aquamarine water? Imagine swimming in water that’s blood-red, or gold. From Las Vegas to Austria, from Manhattan’s bustling Lower East Side to tranquil Tibet, here are some of the world’s weirdest hotel pools.

Where else but Sin City would a hotel devise such an adrenaline-seeking theme to its poolside atmosphere? Tucked into the Golden Nugget property is The Tank, where sharks swim in a glass-enclosed structure and humans coast down a 30-foot waterslide that’s – thankfully – separated from the fish.

Perched on the 57th floor of one of its three towers, the SkyPark hosts a 150-meter infinity-edge pool that creates the appearance of floating off into the clouds while swimming. Rimming the other side of the pool are palm trees and chaise lounges. Bonus: Singapore’s skyline never looked so stunning.

…The Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument! This monument protects the Missouri Breaks of Central Montana. The land is unspoiled, stunning and spans 149 miles of the Upper Missouri River. This unique area provides a great Artist-in-Residence Program that allows artistic opportunities with the terrain serving as your muse.  Sunsets, sunrises, full moons and star gazing allow for the most dramatic settings. This dream is perfect for someone seeking solitude, but is also wonderful to enjoy with loved ones. Suggested activities include floating the river, hiking, exploring or simply just enjoying the view.

How to Find a Sport That You Love

How to Find a Sport That You Love

Even if running isn’t your jam (like it is for champion runner Nick Symmonds), there’s a way to find the right sport for you. (Photo: Flickr/Björn Láczay)

No secret: I freaking love the Olympics.

They are what inspired me to get off my sister’s couch and find a new sport to conquer after my football career ended. And they are what have kept me going through years of crazy training in handball while running my business. They are what I dream about.

So any chance I get to interview an Olympian on The School of Greatness, I take.

Nick Symmonds is not just any Olympian either. The national championship-winner runs faster than 99.9 percent of people on the planet, and he’s been to two Olympic games so far (and is gunning for a slot in 2016).

But Nick isn’t just a runner — he’s also an entrepreneur (and is self-described first and foremost as a businessman.) What I learned from Nick was how powerful a positive mindset is, how to bounce back from a loss, and why it’s so important to him to fight for the rights of athletes to earn higher pay.

As we talked about his path to becoming an Olympian, I found out that Nick had actually tried many different sports all through school. He would play several sports a year and loved many of them. But it wasn’t until he joined his middle school cross country team (for a girl, he admits) that he started to realize how much he loved running in particular.

In fact, he hated running at first. But with time, dedication, supportive teammates and coaches, and the improvements he saw in himself, he started to see that his body was built to run the half-mile — amazingly well.

Nick’s advice to anyone who is trying to find a niche sport that they love is try everything. You don’t know what you haven’t tried.

If you haven’t found a sport yet that you love, set a goal to try something new every month. And have fun with it!

Who says exercise has to be a chore?

As Nick says, “Everyone is an athlete at something.”
